Frequently Asked Questions

How do heat pump hot water systems work?
Heat pumps extract heat from the surrounding air and transfer it at a higher temperature using the refrigerant to heat water in the storage tank. To move the heat, heat pumps work like a refrigerator in reverse.
One of the key advantages of air source heat pumps is their energy efficiency. They typically consume 3 to 4 times less energy than a traditional element-based water tank and can also work in a range of climates.
The initial investment for a heat pump is higher with additional components required for the installation. However, from a long term perspective, they represent a leap in energy efficiency. VEU rebates make their adoption affordable and accessible.
The life expectancy of a heat pump depends on several factors, such as the type of heat pump, location and the maintenance. They normally last an average of 15 years.
An air source heat pump will run at a decibel level of about 40 but on cold days when it needs to work harder to draw extra heat from the air, noise level can reach up to 60 dB, a similar noise range as a fridge or a gas boiler.
Heat pump systems use less energy than an electric heater and produce three times more energy as output with every unit consumed. On an average, they use only 2 kWh per day compared to electric heaters that require 8 kWh per day.
